Men’s Beginner’s Guide to Healthy Skin

Fellas, let’s be real for a sec, simply washing your face with Irish Spring, some other bar soap, or even shampoo is just NOT it. Bar soap has harsh ingredients that can seriously dry out your face and it can also throw your skins pH balance off. Due to this constant stripping of the skin, a breakout or acne is bound to push through. So when it comes to cleansing your face, it’s ok to drop the soap bro!

A lot of men assume that the whole “skincare thingy” is a women’s tradition and/or questions their masculinity. Well I’m sorry to burst your bubble guys, but the gag is, skin care is just as important for men as it is for women!

No matter the age, no matter the gender, healthy skin is always in!

Now this may not apply to most because beards are actually trending, but shaving on the reg is stressing your skin out. It can lead to razor burn, ingrown hairs and irritated skin. I strongly suggest that you invest in a decent shaver rather than purchasing a drug store disposable. Remember, you get what you pay for. Also, when you do shave, a proper moisturizing shaving gel is imperative in safeguarding and lubricating the skin. So slather and lather up guys, and shave downwards in the direction of hair growth for less irritation. My last but not least tip for shaving would be to choose an after-shave without alcohol. Its purpose is to soothe and hydrate post shave. Therefore, calming ingredients such as oats, aloe, or green tea perform best.

Fun Fact: I’ve surveyed a few guys and it turns out that many men actually take more care of their beard than their face! Wowzers.

I’m almost 100% sure that most males with a crumb catcher (a.k.a. beard) are aware of the many products available like beard butters, fancy beard washes, sprays and oils etc. Beards are trending like crazy. There is a gazillion of YouTube videos dedicated to assisting the bearded community with beard care. That’s dope and all, but listen to me fellas you gotta remember the face too. Keep that same energy when it comes to your skin. Due to the increased production of testosterone, men have tougher, oilier skin with more collagen. Many men also work in more severe conditions where clogged pores are more likely. Such as a career in construction for example, where exposure to dirt and debris is inevitable. Regardless, a proper cleansing is highly important.

I’m not even gonna front tho, skincare is actually getting pretty popular for men. At the same time, many really don’t have a consistent routine or know where or how to start. This guide is for you. Its time to get with the program. In fact, Jack Black, Kiehls, and Shiseido are a few popular brands that can help you get the ball rolling with their men’s starter kits. However, you don’t necessarily have to start with a kit. They’re so many products to choose from, and once you get more insight about your skin, as well as get more comfortable choosing products, you’ll find yourself searching for so many other options.

Now what you not gonna do is run out and go blow a bag on skincare products!

Let’s start by taking baby steps until you figure out what actually works for you. First things first, if you’re unsure of your skin type, check out my “What’s Your Skin Type?” post from my blog feed. Knowing your skin type is very important in beginning a skin care regimen.

Ok so boom, here’s how to begin:

The bare necessities needed to begin your healthy skin journey includes a cleanser, exfoliator, toner, moisturizer and sunscreen. All should be specifically formulated for your skin type to get optimal results and avoid further problems to your skin. An easy way to try products without hurting your pockets will be to purchase trial sized items or getting samples. Try them out and then buy the full size if it works for you.

Following these simple steps day and night can and will lead to visible results overtime. So grab the basics, start a routine and stick to it. Eventually you’ll learn to incorporate other products in your daily routine based on skin concerns. For example, a serum for extra hydration in the winter or an overnight drying lotion to get rid of a pimple. Your regimen can be modified at any time based on your skin’s unique concerns. This simple guide is just the beginning of getting your skin on track to looking and feeling it’s very best. Believe it or not, men can glow too!

What’s Your Skin Type?

Okay beauts, you need to know your skin type and you need to know it now. Knowing your skin type is literally the MOST vital step of skin care. This info is needed in order to select products for a solid regimen. Many are unaware of their skin type, which leads to products that aren’t leading to any improvement or products that can make your skin concerns worse. No worries though, here’s an easy way to determine whether you have normal, oily, dry, or combination skin. Your healthy skin journey awaits you!

Let’s figure it out…

  1. First thoroughly cleanse your face and pat dry.
  2. Do NOT apply any products; instead leave your face bare for about 1 to 2 hours.
  3. Head to a well lit area, grab a mirror and take a look at your T-Zone.
  4. Check out the size of your pores, the amount of oil produced in this area, as well as the texture of your skin.
  5. What do you see and feel?

A proper cleanser, toner, exfoliator, and moisturizer are ideal to begin with. Advanced products such as serums, acids, and masks can be incorporated into your routine over time. For now, grab the basics and be consistent. Consistency is key. I repeat, CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Let’s face it – clear, radiant, healthy skin won’t happen overnight. Be patient and give the products time to do their job. Good luck!
